Your story isnt the problem.

You’re not a bad writer. You’re just missing the right structure and feedback. Most new writers struggle because of four key reasons:

1

Uncertainty about your plot

Perhaps you have some cool scene ideas, but you don’t know how to link these disjointed plot points together (or how to fill in the gaps between them).

Or maybe you have great character concepts, but don’t know what your characters should actually do in your story.

Or maybe you’ve started writing a book, only to get stuck halfway through, because you don’t know the right direction for your plot … or you’ve lost the excitement for your story.

2

Slow feedback Loop

The traditional way to work on a novel is to write in isolation for a year (or more), then send your manuscript to an editor, and then discover all the issues to fix.

This creates an extremely slow feedback loop.

As a result, it takes you an incredibly long time to improve your storytelling skills. Plus, it can be tough to receive hundreds of editorial notes, with no step-by-step guidance or support to actually implement these changes.

3

Struggling to express your ideas on the page

In your mind, you’ve got an amazing scene idea, or an incredibly cool setting … but you just don’t know how to actually type the right words onto the page in a way that makes readers feel what you want them to feel.

Or perhaps you feel like your descriptions are too overwhelming, or your dialogue is flat, or your characters are lacking any sense of distinctive voice.

As a result, your writing feels sluggish and painful. You edit the same few paragraphs over and over, without making them any better. This means it takes forever to make any real progress with your word count.

Working in isolation

You’ve got no one else who can help you out with your story. No one to keep you accountable, or provide you with quality feedback, or give you a boost whenever your motivation is running low.

Without external guidance or a community of peers who are equally passionate about writing, it’s easy to hit a roadblock, lose your confidence, and abandon a project you were once passionate about.

How the Fantasy Writing Bootcamp fixes these problems

How the Fantasy Writing Bootcamp fixes these problems

After taking four cohorts of writers through the Fantasy Writing Bootcamp, we’ve developed a system to help you master every aspect of the craft.

By the end of the 12-week program, the big-picture aspects of your story – like your characters, plot, worldbuilding, and theme – will all be fully developed in the most compelling way possible.

Thanks to the weekly feedback you’ll receive on your story, the sentence-level details of your writing (your descriptions, dialogue, prose, scene design, etc.) will be just as strong as well.

Most importantly, you will be able to avoid all the common problems mentioned above.

Gain complete clarity and confidence about your plot

Instead of jumping blindly into drafting (and getting lost in the middle of your book) you will use our Hourglass Outlining method to rapidly test many different versions of your story. This will then let you find the strongest possible direction to pursue.

With weekly feedback on your outline from your Story Coach, you’ll develop your plot and characters in a unified, cohesive way. Not only will this give you full confidence in the direction of your story, but it will also make you feel incredibly excited about your book. That’s because you’ll know that the big-picture design of your story is working before you even write the first sentence.

Unlock a real-time feedback loop

We smash the traditional, painfully slow feedback loop where you write in isolation for years only to discover deep structural issues later.

Instead, you will function like a professional athlete, with an expert coach helping you out from the sidelines in real time. By submitting pages to your personal Story Coach every single week, you can catch mistakes immediately and instantly course-correct. This rapid feedback loop compresses years of trial-and-error growth down into just 12 weeks. Plus, having a personal Story Coach ensures you’ll never get stuck wondering what to do next.

Gain the tools to effortlessly express yourself on the page

Instead of staring at a blank screen or getting trapped in a frustrating loop of pointlessly editing the same few paragraphs, you will master the art and science of effective prose.

Thanks to weekly training from Jed, and weekly feedback from your Story Coach, you’ll learn exactly how to write brilliant dialogue and immersive descriptions. Plus, you’ll discover how to perfectly structure your scenes every single time, so that readers are constantly captivated by your story.

In short, you’ll learn how to find the right words to bring your characters and world to life in exactly the way you want.

Built-in accountability and community

You no longer have to walk the road as a lone writer dealing with low motivation and self-doubt. Every single week, you will attend a live lecture and a live office hours session with Jed, work closely with your dedicated story coach, and write alongside a small group of seriously motivated fantasy authors. Having an external structure, clear deadlines, and a passionate peer group means you never have to hit a roadblock alone or abandon a project you love.

It was so immensely helpful to have like-minded people to work with and bounce ideas off. Now all of us are continuing to talk to each other about our stories, making video calls, and reviewing each other's outlines and even some of the early chapters that we have written. Thank you so much, Jed. This was an absolute blast!”

What is the Fantasy Writing Bootcamp?

The Fantasy Writing Bootcamp is a 12-week live program designed to help fantasy writers create a complete scene-by-scene outline, begin writing their first draft, and improve their craft with ongoing guidance and feedback.

Who is the Bootcamp for?

It is for fantasy writers who have a story idea or an unfinished novel and want a clearer structure, consistent progress, and expert support. You can benefit whether you are outlining, drafting, or revising your story.

What will I accomplish during the 12 weeks?

You'll develop a complete outline for your novel using Jed's Hourglass Outlining Method, strengthen your writing process, and make meaningful progress on your first draft. The goal is to get you as close to writing "The End" as possible, while building habits you can keep using long after the program ends.

Will I finish my entire first draft in 12 weeks?

Finishing depends on your novel, starting point, writing pace, and available time, so completing a full draft cannot be guaranteed. You will leave with a clear outline, stronger momentum, and a practical system for continuing until your manuscript is finished.

Do I need to have my novel completely planned before joining?

No. The Bootcamp helps you develop your story into a complete scene-by-scene outline before turning that plan into pages. You can join with an early idea, a few chapters, or an unfinished manuscript.

What is the Hourglass Outlining Method?

It's Jed Herne's approach to outlining a fantasy novel. Rather than locking you into one direction, it lets you quickly test different versions of your story and develop your characters and plot together, so you can find the strongest version before you commit months to writing it.

What support and feedback will I receive?

The program includes live teaching, office hours, personalized coaching feedback, and opportunities for peer critique. This allows you to identify story problems and improve your work while you are actively writing.

Who is Jed Herne?

Jed Herne is a fantasy author and writing coach who has written four fantasy novels, published short stories, worked on a video game, and authored the number-one Amazon bestselling book Plotting Your Fantasy Novel. He has also built an audience of more than 160,000 writers and delivered over 1,000 hours of live coaching.

How do I join the Bootcamp?

Start by submitting an application. If the program appears to be a good fit, you will be invited to a free story consult call with Jed's team to discuss your novel, your goals, and whether the Bootcamp is right for you.

Are places limited?

Yes. This is planned to be the final cohort, places are limited, and more than 300 writers have joined the waitlist. Applications are reviewed as they arrive, so applying early gives you the best opportunity to be considered.
